SCHOOL dinners at Congleton and Alsager high schools are to cost more than meals at local primary schools.

The price of a two-course meal in Cheshire primary schools is to rise by 10p to £1.90 from September.

Pupils eating a two-course meal with larger portions and from a wide range of menus at high schools will be charged £2.05.

“We all know how food and fuel costs continue to rise,” said county council executive member for children’s services, David Rowlands.

“This makes it inevitable that the price of a school meal will also increase.

“However CBS Catering works hard to keep costs down.

“Cheshire has always charged the same price for meals in secondary schools as for primary schools.

“However this is changing because portions are larger, and the range of food in school cash cafeterias is wider.

“CBS Catering devised menus that meet the Government’s nutritional guidelines for food in schools, and all the food purchased comes from reputable suppliers.

“We aim to source local food, and we are currently exploring options for using even more local produce in our menus.”

The county council said the first of the two courses served up at its schools consisted of a home-cooked meal, accompanied by unlimited vegetables and salad, with a traditional pudding or fruit and yoghurt for a second course.

All meals come with a choice of fresh fruit juice or semi-skimmed milk.
