CHARITY shop volunteers are blooming marvels when it comes to dressing their window.

Betty Edden and Delyth Ward-Smith produced the top display in the Congleton Carnival window dressing competition.

The women are volunteers at the Cancer Research UK shop in Bridge Street.

They created a huge sunflower around a fruit and veg display on a rustic wheelbarrow.

The striking display won the charity section in the competition, and was also judged overall winner.

There were 15 entries, first prize in the business category going to Bryans in the High Street for what the judges said was “a fantastic garden creation,” featuring soil, a path, an allotment and a shed.

Beeby opticians came second in the business section, with Debonair in third.

Special commendations were awarded to Three Way Travel and Malbon Townsend, The Stationery Cupboard, Congleton One Stop Shop and Hollinshead jewellers.

The Youth Info shop came second in the charity section, with the East Cheshire Hospice shop third and a highly commended award to the British Heart Foundation shop.

The competition was judged by town mayor Denis Murphy, Cllr Douglas Parker, carnival committee vice-chairman Jeanne Whitehurst and town centre and marketing manager Jackie MacArthur.

Carnival committee secretary Ros Peach thanked every shop which took part.

“They all looked great, and added colour and interest throughout the town,” she said.

Each entry was marked for colour, design, theme and effort.

“It was a difficult decision, as they were all so different and so good,” said town mayor Denis Murphy.
