KNYPERSLEY 1st X1 were denied victory on Saturday by a rearguard action in a rain-affected match against Longton.

Knypersley had the visitors on the rack at 27 for six, but were unable to prise out number three Wilshaw.

He went on to score a crucial 44 not out to enable his side to hang on for a draw.

A total of 43 overs were lost to rain, and the match started at 4.15pm.

Knypersley opened with 114 for seven off 35 overs, Ross Salmon top scoring with 26 not out.

Kim Barnett scored 21, captain Paul Goodwin made 18, and Darren Long scored 14.

Barnett and Long produced Knypersley’s best stand, putting on 30 for the second wicket.

Knypersley’s bowlers scored early success against the Longton batsmen, taking a wicket with one run on the board.

Further wickets fell in rapid succession, at 13, 19, 20, 20 and 27, the sixth wicket going down after only 13 overs.

Wilshaw and the Longton number eight steadied the ship with a stand of 34 for the seventh wicket, and Knypersley ran out of overs.

Longton ended on 65 for seven off their 32 overs.

The Longton wickets were shared between two bowlers, each notching up five maiden overs on the way.

Rob James took four for 35 off 16 overs, and Victor Mpitsang ended with three for 21 off 12.

Eight of the batsmen on the day fell to catches, and Knypersley earned seven points to three for Longton.

Knypersley travel to Moddershall this Saturday.
