Bears roar to easy win

WINSFORD United were over-run by a rampant Congleton Town on Tuesday night.

The Bears cruised to a 4-1 away win in a match where they created numerous chances.

Winsford took an early lead, but Congleton dominated thereafter, and could have scored more than the four they tucked away.

The excellent display against 11th-placed Winsford followed a 2-1 victory on Saturday at home to second from bottom Flixton.

The two victories are a welcome boost for the Bears following five games without a win.

The victories have left Congleton in fourth place, seven points behind leaders Fylde.

"We dominated the game against Winsford, who offered almost nothing in midfield," said Congleton press officer Ken Mead.

"We played simple balls and easy passes, and supported the forwards.

"It was simple stuff, but it worked on the night, and any score between four and eight would have been reasonable.”

Mason stunned Congleton to give Winsford the lead after eight minutes with a shot from 35 yards out which flew over the Bears’ keeper.

Congleton fought back three minutes later to level through James Marrow.

The striker was put through, and got in front of the Winsford centre half to slot home from 12 yards.

Ryan Baker gave the Bears the lead on 26 minutes with the best of Congleton’s four goals.

He hit a shot on the volley over the Winsford keeper and just inside the far post.

The Bears extended their lead nine minutes before half-time following a cross from Andy John which was partly blocked.

The ball looped up and broke for Marrow, who drilled it home from eight yards out for his second of the night.

Congleton sealed a victory which looked never in doubt with their fourth 20 minutes into the second half.

A corner was headed on by Wayne Brotherton, and Graham Molloy headed home from close range.

The Bears had a number of chances after the fourth goal to increase their tally.

Flixton took the lead on Saturday on 18 minutes after their keeper had blocked a Marrow shot.

Flixton broke up the other end, and Graham ran through to slot the ball past the Bears keeper.

Carl Nesbitt equalised on 73 minutes when he curled a free kick round the wall into the net, and Simon Robinson scored the winner from the penalty spot nine minutes from time.

Congleton travel to Formby this Saturday, and are at home to Atherton LR next Tuesday.
