James McAvoy has told how he stumbled over his lines while on stage in his theatre role as Macbeth.

The X-Men actor has earned rave reviews since taking on the role last month in the new production of Shakespeare's darkest tale.

James, 33, said that he is yet to suffer from stage fright, but admitted: "I did dry for the first time in three and a half weeks last night.

"And I realised that I said the same line twice and I went 'oh dear this is a bad moment for me.'

"The audience I don't think quite noticed. Some of them will have but I don't think anybody else noticed and then I got it back on track and it was fine. It's going well."

The Scottish star has told how the production, at Trafalgar Studios in London, has been taking a physical toll.

"It's physically the most demanding job I've ever done, including any action movie I've ever done," he said.

"It's more physically dynamic than anything. We've got cuts and bruises all over and we are down at the physio a couple of times a week.

"We're like an army. We're like a walking, fighting army that are struggling to get through at the moment."
