Gillian Anderson has hinted that she would be open to starring in a third X-Files movie.

The Fall actress starred opposite David Duchovny in the cult hit TV show from 1993 to 2002 and two spin-off movies, and there has long been speculation about whether there would be a third film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gillian suggested she would be on board if it happened.

Speaking at Comic-Con, she said: "A film would be great."

However, Gillian apparently said she would not reprise the role of Dana Scully for a limited TV series.

The actress was reunited with former co-star David, X-Files writer Vince Gilligan and the show's creator Chris Carter at the convention, where they sat together for a panel discussion marking the show's 20th anniversary.

Californication star David - who played Scully's partner Fox Mulder - revealed her would love to work with Gillian again outside of their X-Files characters. He suggested that it had to be the right project because what they have is "special".

During Comic-Con the pair auctioned off a cardboard cut out of themselves and David joked: "This is how we're going to get the movie made by the way!"
