Screen actors clinch theatre nods

Dominic West, Jude Law, Rachel Weisz and Dame Helen Mirren will battle it out for awards celebrating the cream of the theatre world.

Sadie Frost and Melanie C were also recognised in the nominations for the 10th annual Whatsonstage.com Awards, which are voted for by theatregoers.

Following his success at last month's London Evening Standard Theatre Awards, Mark Rylance will be hoping to add to his accolades for his role in Jerusalem with a nomination in the best actor in a play category.

His competition includes The Wire star Dominic for his role in Life Is a Dream and Jude, who has taken his hit role as Hamlet from London to Broadway.

In the best actress in a play group, Alison Steadman is nominated for Enjoy, Dame Helen for Phedre, Juliet Stevenson for Duet for One, Lesley Sharp for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and Rachel Weisz for A Streetcar Named Desire.

Lenny Henry, who also recently picked up a best newcomer gong at the Evening Standard's awards ceremony, will contest another newcomer award for his theatrical debut in Othello with X Factor's Diana Vickers for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, among others.

Two other well-known newcomers to the West End Stage, Sadie and Mel C, have also been recognised for their debuts - Sadie in the best solo performance category for Touched and Mel for her part as Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers in the best takeover in a role category.
