Absurdist act wins comedy award

An absurdist stand-up act has been named the best comedy show of the Edinburgh Fringe - just a year after being named best newcomer.

John Kearns scooped the £10,000 prize at the 34th Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Awards for his show Shtick, from a shortlist that included an unprecedented three newcomers from the previous year.

Kearns beat fellow 2013 newcomers Liam Williams and Romesh Ranganathan at the awards, which were announced at Edinburgh's Dovecot Studios.

New York-based comedian Alex Edelman won this year's best newcomer award for his first Edinburgh show Millennial.

This year's shortlist for the £5,000 newcomer prize was an international and UK-wide affair, featuring acts from Australia, America, Manchester and Hull.

A further £5,000 panel prize was awarded to Phil Ellis and his friends Jim Elf and Bonzo the Dog for their show Funz And Gamez.

The winners and nominees can be seen at the Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Awards Show tomorrow night at the Underbelly, Bristo Square.
