England's Stuart Broad claimed a wicket before and after lunch
England picked up three more wickets to stay in with a chance of victory on a well-contested final day of their warm-up match against a New Zealand XI.
Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes were successful once each both before and after lunch, and Graeme Swann also put himself in the wickets column.
After England declared on their overnight 256 for nine to set their hosts 334 to win in a minimum 90 overs, progress was unremarkable for both sides.
A draw was therefore the most likely outcome but all results still feasible as the hosts reached a teatime 167 for five.
