Christie goes through to final

Congleton Guardian: Elise Christie, left, won her semi-final Elise Christie, left, won her semi-final

British short track speed skater Elise Christie is through to the final of the 500 metres at the Winter Olympics following a terrific semi-final win in Sochi's Iceberg Skating Palace.

The 23-year-old is one of Team GB's main hopes of a podium finish in Russia, although her speciality is the 1000m, in which she retained her European title in Dresden last month.

Racing in the second semi-final against three Chinese skaters, including Fan Kexin, who had beaten her into second-place in the quarter-final, Christie was given some hope when Fan fell early on.

And in a spirited race she just edged over the line before Li Jianrou with Liu Qiuhong in third place.
