THE recent announcement that the minister for communities and local Government is recommending two unitary authorities for Cheshire, subject to confirmation of the financial robustness of the bid, could lead to a continuation of "warfare" between councils in Cheshire.
New Labour appear determined to force some form of unitary option on the people of Cheshire.
The minister states that a single unitary would be too large, would be seen as too remote and less able to deliver neighbourhood empowerment.
The same could be said about two unitaries.
Already a significant amount of officer and councillor time has been spent dealing with unitary bids, and this announcement could result in yet more time being lost in performing normal council functions.
Congleton Borough Liberal Democrats believe that all unitary bids should be ditched and that we should move forward with the improved two tier option.
